Our community began from an organic social media post, evolving into a WhatsApp community of over 300 women in four days
On December 10, 2023, Ellie Frost made a post on Facebook looking for more women to go backcountry touring with. After moving back to the front range from the mountains, she was out of the shape her mountain touring partners were, and rather than venture into the backcountry alone she made a call for other women to join her.
Over 30 women responded to the original post and after a tour or two, taking out a first time backcountry beauty, and meeting a handful of women, it became clear she could not connect and ski with all of them consistently enough to not connect all of them.
At a meetup in Denver with Julia Garrahan, Julie Voyles, and Danielle Maxey, Danielle suggested using WhatsApp. That evening Ellie went home, high on touring with baddies and meeting new babes, feeling the frustrations of being a woman in a sport dominated by men. After seeing a post by Todd Duncan for a beginner friendly event, she decided to push the group further, posting in two Facebook groups.
Four days later the WhatsApp community was full of over 300 women. The conversation flowed with intros of badassery and might, and a new movement began.
Immediately following the explosion, Ellie, an app developer, decided to launch an app to accommodate the needs of the community. The first month saw meetups in Golden, Boulder, Frisco, and Denver, along with thirty or more night skins, daytime tours, and fun outings amongst members of the group.
After completing our first month as a group, the community vibe was stronger than ever, with new women being recruited out of parking lots and trailheads.
